Our Commitment to Our Environment

Community Support

SIRCET Stewart Island/Rakiura Community and Environmental Trust

We support SIRCET Stewart Island/Rakiura Community and Environmental Trust by sponsorship and locating predator pest traps in the forest reserve that forms part of Kakapo Cottage.

To support the Kakapo and Ulva Island, we will be donating 10% of the value of our bookings during the time of the Kakapo Encounter (September 8 to October 22nd 2008) to the Ulva Island Trust.

Environmental Responsibility

At Kakapo Cottage we are conscious of our environment and our carbon footprint.  Environmental impact is minimised by our recent renovation and modernisation and the use of:

RecycleEnvironmentally Friendly Eco-tourism

  • Rain tank water

  • Flued gas heating and cooking

  • Front loading washer

  • Eco-lighting throughout

  • Thermal drapes

  • Rubbish/garbage recycling

We encourage our guests to conserve water and energy and minimise your impact to the environment during your stay.

Carbon NeutralCarbon Neutral

We consider staying at Kakapo Cottage to be carbon neutral activity.  Using the calculators found in the CarboNZero programme and the New Zealand Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Carbon Sequestration Rates data, our land planted in native podocarp forest reserve sequesters well in excess the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by activities at Kakapo Cottage each year.
